Great Barrier Reef
One of Australia's Biggest landforms is the famous Great Barrier Reef. It is the world's largest reef system and has over 900 islands that stretches over 2 600 km. It is located along the east coast of Australia within the Coral Sea. The Barrier Reef is home to a variety of animals including whales, dolphins and sharks. The Great Barrier Reef has lots of flora growing along it including, seagrass, coral and algae. Seagrass is not the same as seaweed because it has real roots and are the only flowering plants in the sea. Corals are colonies made up of tiny animals polyps. Porites is the oldest coral on the Great Barrier Reef and is about 1,000 years old. Tiny Algae called zooxanthellae live in the flesh of most corals. They are usually found in the shallower parts of the reef because like other plants, they require sunlight to survive.
